The past month of August gave us several new and exciting announcements out of Egypt regarding the Grand Egyptian Museum. While detail and clarity are not Egypt’s strongpoints, our breakdown, analysis, and synthesis of the information that has trickled out over the past month will give you the clearest picture yet of what you can expect over the coming months at the Grand Egyptian Museum.
For starters, while their initial “big announcement” earlier this month left more UNsaid that said (as was explained in detail here in this first GEM video update of the month) subsequent info that trickled out revealed that the initially announced new opening date was only part of the story.
New information later changed yet again the date on which the global public could finally expect to be able to visit the GEM. But more importantly for those traveling to Egypt during this upcoming high season period, it has now become apparent (as is detailed in this second GEM update video of the month) that the GEM will close entirely for a full two and a half weeks during one of the most inconvenient periods of the year for foreign visitors.
So here’s the executive summary of what the latest Grand Egyptian Museum intel:
The GEM will now have a “Grand Closing” period (when the full museum will be completely closed to the public) from October 15, 2025 until November 03, 2025.
The GEM will host an invite-only grand opening ceremony for Egyptian politicians, local celebrities, regional dignitaries, ambassadors, etc. on November 01, 2025.
The GEM will reopen to the general public on November 04, 2025, although it remains unclear how ticket sales will be handled for this first week after its full reopening.
Despite the confusion and lack of proper communications or public relations, there IS good news for international travelers who have been waiting for years to plan trips to Egypt when it is finally safe to do so – safe in the sense of knowing that the GEM will be fully open. We can now say with about 95% confidence that this new set of dates for both the “Grand Closing” followed by the multi-day “Grand Opening” will likely NOT be changed again.
For the details that go into this analysis and prediction, watch the two very short GEM video updates that were released over the past month on The Egypt Travel Channel. Then you can reasonably decide for yourself the level of confidence you want to put into this latest set of announcements and predictions.
